The Cherry Orchard - Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov's masterwork of early Twentieth Century drama, The Cherry Orchard explores the changing social and economic forces in Russia at the turn of the Twentieth Century. Following the abolition of serfdom, the rise of the middle class, and the decline of the aristocracy, society was changing in dramatic ways. The play follows Madame Lyubov Andreievna Ranevskaya, an aristocratic landowner whose fortune has declined. Her family's estate is sold to the son of a former serf, and its famous cherry orchard is destroyed. A perennial favorite of the theater, the play provides a critique of both materialism and aristocracy.
